MEA assays generate electrophysiological readouts through the placement of multiple electrodes recording at once. These recordings offer the capability to capture the electrical activity of cells without the disruption of their membrane or the need for voltage dyes. This enables short or long-term MEA recordings over time on the same monolayer culture.
Most cardiac side effects, like torsade de pointes and ventricular fibrillation, are associated with drugs interfering with the function of ion channels. Through a range of MEA assays, we can capture changes in the extracellular field potential of cardiomyocytes, generated by the electrophysiological processes across the cell membrane. Compounds affecting different ion channels can consequently be studied using the MEA measurement.

In neurological research, MEA assays are used to record network neuronal firing: the occurrence of physiologically relevant patterns of normal brain activity. In this case study, we assessed the effects of a set of pro-arrhythmic compounds on Pluricyte Cardiomyocytes electrophysiology by MEA measurements using the Axion Maestro MEA system. The goal was to determine the compound effects on beat period, field potential duration and spike amplitude.
These graphs show the assessed cardioactive compounds and their effects on beat period (displays the time period between two successive sodium spikes), spike amplitude, and field potential duration of the Pluricyte Cardiomyocytes. Data are expressed as percentage of change when compared to the baseline.
